Australia Emergency

Emergency services

In Australia, the emergency phone number is 000. It is a free call from any phone in Australia, including mobile phones.

Only call this number in case of a life threatening situation. The emergency services that are available are the police, fire brigade or ambulance service. Do not call 000 if it is not an emergency.

When you call the operator will first be asked what services you require, the police, fire brigade, or ambulance. You need to stay calm and answer all questions clearly and correctly. It is important you know the address of location of the emergency and take note of the local landmarks nearby (such as bridges, statues, etc.).

Whilst waiting for professional help to arrive at the scene, do not do anything that will put you or anyone else’s life in danger. Help will arrive very quickly, and it is best to leave these critical situations to the trained professionals.

Reporting a crime

If it is not an emergency and you need police assistance, whether reporting a crime against you or reporting a crime which is in progress, go to the nearest police station, or contact your local Police Assistance Line in your state.

In the ACT, NSW, Tasmania, Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia, you can contact the police on the Police Assistance Line on 131 444. Do not call this number if you live in Victoria or Queensland. You will have to contact your local police station.

State Emergency Services (SES)

The state emergency service (or commonly known as the SES) is an organization that assists police, fire brigade and the ambulance services in the event of emergencies such as evacuations, search and rescue and natural disasters, severe floods, storms, bushfires etc.

If you require emergency assistance from the SES, you can call 132 500, anywhere and anytime in Australia.
